Provavelmente foi encomendado e construído por Adriano como um túmulo para ele e seus sucessores. Desde 1925, a estrutura abriga o Museo Nazionale di Castel S. Angelo e suas coleções históricas e artísticas, incluindo relíquias e outros objetos de interesse do exército italiano, num cenário monumental restaurado para esse fim.
