A forma da praça atual reproduz com precisão o perímetro do antigo estádio que o imperador construiu em 86 d.C. para competições de atletismo e corridas de cavalos. A praça é dominada pela Igreja de Sant'Agnese in Agone, uma das mais magníficas arquiteturas barrocas de Roma. Três fontes adornam a praça: Fontana del Moro, Fontana de 'Calderari e, ao centro, a imponente Fonte dos Quatro Rios.
